Aren't lawns meant to be stepped on??

I took my young niece on a walk around my sister's neighborhood and being a young kid that she is, she got distracted by a butterfly and went to chase it. Of course, I had to go after her, but then I was told off that we can't step on the lawn!! What's this manicured green patch for anyway if not for walking and play? What do they tell their kids when they want to play outside? Just ask them to stare from afar or better yet, hand them their phones?? I'm really floored by this experience!!

Now, there are signs everywhere telling people to stay off the lawn because it just got treated for weeds. It's a bit sad how distant we've all gotten from what's around us, especially the folks who have the most seem to be the least connected

I feel you lol. Lawns should be for living, not just looking. Telling off a kid for chasing a butterfly feels over the top fr. What's the point of grass if you cant even step on it? crazy

That's wild! I feel like lawns should be for running around, not just looking pretty. did they at least explain why, or was it just a strict "no stepping on my lawn" rule? Sounds like a weird way to enjoy outdoor space!
